NDI Short Term Accommodation (STA/Respite)

Caring for a loved one with disability is one of the most rewarding roles a person can take on — and one of the most demanding. Carers need time to rest, recharge, and attend to their own wellbeing, just as participants deserve fresh experiences, new environments, and a break from their usual routine. Austin Abilities provides NDIS respite care and short-term accommodation (STA) in Geelong, offering a safe, supportive, and enjoyable experience for participants while giving families and carers the genuine rest they need.

Our respite care services are person-centred and flexible, designed to work around the schedules and needs of both participants and their families. We offer in-home respite — where a trained support worker comes to the participant’s home — as well as centre-based and short-term accommodation options for participants who benefit from a change of environment. During any respite arrangement, participants continue to receive the same high standard of personal care, social engagement, and lifestyle support that they would expect from Austin Abilities at any time.

Respite is not simply a break — it is an opportunity. For participants, respite care opens the door to new social connections, activities, and experiences. For carers, it provides the breathing space needed to sustain their vital role with energy and care. Austin Abilities is committed to making every respite experience positive, purposeful, and fully aligned with the participant’s goals and NDIS plan.

FAQs

Q: What is the difference between respite care and short-term accommodation (STA)?

Respite care is the broader concept of providing a break for carers and a change of environment for participants. Short-term accommodation (STA) is a specific NDIS support category that funds temporary accommodation and care — typically for up to 28 days per year — away from the participant’s usual home.

We do our best to accommodate urgent and emergency respite needs in Geelong. If your circumstances change unexpectedly and you require immediate respite support, please contact us as soon as possible and our team will work with you to arrange suitable care promptly.

During respite, participants are encouraged to engage in activities they enjoy — whether that is social outings, creative workshops, recreational programs, or relaxing at home. Our support workers plan activities around the participant’s interests, goals, and energy levels to make the experience genuinely enjoyable.
